The Readiness Check

Is your quality system defensible under the edition you work to today, and under the 2026 edition, now published? These are the questions an auditor actually asks, in their words rather than the clause’s.

You get an ordered list of what you can’t currently answer, what you’re already doing right, and the things you may have been told to worry about that aren’t in the standard. There is no score, and there is nothing to fill in before you see it.

Where are you with ISO 9001 today?
Do you design what you make, or do you build to someone else's drawing?

If every drawing arrives from the customer, clause 8.3 is the classic exclusion and five records stop applying to you.

Does anything you make get measured with instruments where the measurement actually matters?

Gauges, calipers, torque wrenches, test equipment: anything a decision to accept or reject depends on.

Has anyone written down whether climate change is a relevant issue for your business?

Either answer is fine. The question is whether the determination exists, not what it concluded.

For each quality objective, can you say what the number was before you set the target?
When you scrap or rework a part, who is the named person authorized to decide that, and is it written down?
How do you know what your customers think of you (not how you performed, but what they think)?

On-time delivery and defect rates are your measurements of your own performance.

When you close a corrective action, how do you know it worked?
Does what you actually do match the interval you wrote down?

Audits, management reviews, calibration, supplier re-evaluation: the declared interval versus the real one.

Which of your suppliers has been re-evaluated in the last two years?
Does your quality policy say anything about where the business is going?
Could you show an auditor how leadership promotes a quality culture and ethical behavior?

There is nothing to fill in here. This one mandates no record at all.

Does your audit program state what it is for, or just when things happen?
Do you keep risks and opportunities in one list or two?
Which edition are you working to, and what is your intent for the change of edition?
Who else in your company could answer these questions if you were hit by a bus?

Not a clause. It is the question that decides whether your quality system survives you.

Answer at least one question to see the result.

You can stop at any point and see the result for what you’ve answered. Skipping a question never counts against you, because an unanswered question produces nothing at all.
